The Surprise in the Desert
Metal sculptures in Borrego Springs
My colleague and I were in San Diego for a winter business meeting. Both keen photographers, we carved out some time and took a trip inland to “take a look.” To be honest, I wanted some gritty desert photographs in the style of Anton Corbijn’s Joshua Tree album photoshoot.

Either way, we absolutely found the desert.
When we stumbled across the small town of Borrego Springs, we saw it. From the road we couldn’t quite make out what it actually was, but it was certainly interesting enough for us to turn around and take another look.
Ricardo Breceda is a local(ish) metal sculptor. He builds these metal sculptures and plants them (with permission, of course) around the town. Here are a couple of examples. They’re spread all around, miles apart. You’ll need a car to drive around to see them all.

Mr. Breceda keeps saying that he’s done with sculpting, but then, ever so often, a new one will unexpectedly pop up.
